04 - 3D UML Sequential Evaluation Methodology

This chapter outlines the research problem and methodologies applied to researching X3D-UML. The aim of the research is to provide both qualitative and quantitative evidence as to the benefit of three particular 3D extensions to UML. This chapter provides the generic process that is applied to all three extensions.

The methodology chosen to be most suitable for this study is “Sequential Evaluation” as defined by Gabbard, Hix and Swan (Gabbard et al., 1999). Sequential Evaluation utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques, ordered in a sequence that is designed to enhance the quantity and quality of results produced from limited research time and budget.
